Herbert Steinbeisser: a life with the Xenopus embryo.

چکیده
Ketsch, Heidelberg and Ecuador Herbert was born in Ketsch, a small village near the Rhine river where he grew up fishing for pike with his grandfather. He did his Ph.D. at the nearby University of Heidelberg with Michael Trendelenburg studying the transcription of protein coding genes in Xenopus oocytes (Steinbeisser et al., 1989). After graduating he won an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation postdoctoral fellowship to work with Eugenia del Pino at the Pontificia Universidad Católica in Quito, Ecuador. There, in 1990, he worked with the giant oocytes of the marsupial frog Gastrotheca, which carries fertilized eggs on its back (del Pino et al., 1986). Herbert loved Ecuador and maintained a long-standing exchange of students.

Xenopus paraxial protocadherin has signaling functions and is involved in tissue separation.
Protocadherins have homophilic adhesion properties and mediate selective cell-cell adhesion and cell sorting. Knockdown of paraxial protocadherin (PAPC) function in the Xenopus embryo impairs tissue separation, a process that regulates separation of cells of ectodermal and mesodermal origin during gastrulation. We show that PAPC can modulate the activity of the Rho GTPase and c-jun N-terminal k...
متن کاملThe Xenopus Ets transcription factor XER81 is a target of the FGF signaling pathway
We report the cloning of a cDNA encoding a Xenopus laevis Ets-type transcription factor. This new Xenopus gene belongs to the PEA3 subfamily of Ets proteins and shows the highest degree of sequence similarity to the mouse and human ER81 genes. The Xenopus ER81 gene (XER81) is transcribed in the embryo after mid blastula transition (MBT) and three transcripts of 3, 4 and 6 kb are detected throug...
متن کاملConserved Spätzle/Toll signaling in dorsoventral patterning of Xenopus embryos
The Spätzle/Toll signaling pathway controls ventral axis formation in Drosophila by generating a gradient of nuclear Dorsal protein. Dorsal controls the downstream regulators dpp and sog, whose patterning functions are conserved between insects and vertebrates. Although there is no experimental evidence that the upstream events are conserved as well, we set out to ask if a vertebrate embryo can...
متن کاملEndogenous Cerberus activity is required for anterior head specification in Xenopus.
We analyzed the endogenous requirement for Cerberus in Xenopus head development. 'Knockdown' of Cerberus function by antisense morpholino oligonucleotides did not impair head formation in the embryo. In contrast, targeted increase of BMP, Nodal and Wnt signaling in the anterior dorsal-endoderm (ADE) resulted in synergistic loss of anterior head structures, without affecting more posterior axial...
متن کاملXenopus paraxial protocadherin inhibits Wnt/β-catenin signalling via casein kinase 2β.
Xenopus paraxial protocadherin (PAPC) regulates cadherin-mediated cell adhesion and promotes the planar cell polarity (PCP) pathway. Here we report that PAPC functions in the Xenopus gastrula as an inhibitor of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. The intracellular domain of PAPC interacts with casein kinase 2 beta (CK2β), which is part of the CK2 holoenzyme. The CK2α/β complex stimulates Wnt/β-catenin s...
